On the U.S. Open, a couple of American women and American men reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in 21 years.
Both women are first-time Grand Slam semifinalists: Jessica Pegula, at age 30 the oldest U.S. woman to make her first Slam semi in the Open Era. And Emma Navarro, who had one Grand Slam match win before this year and is now a top-10 player.
For the men, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz will meet in the first all-American men’s important semifinal because the 2005 U.S. Open. That ensures an American guy will make a main final for the first time seeing that Andy Roddick at 2009 Wimbledon.
Both protecting U.S. Open singles champions — Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic — had been bounced before the quarterfinals.
It’s the first time on account that 2002 that none of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer could have received a Grand Slam in a calendar 12 months. Djokovic had his earliest Grand Slam defeat since the 2017 Australian Open.

2024 U.S. Open men’s singles draw, bracket
No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open champion, is joined in the semifinals by three men who have never been to a Grand Slam final. Sinner’s semifinal foe is 22-year-old, 25th seed Brit Jack Draper, who hasn’t lost a set in five matches.
Americans Taylor Fritz (12th seed) and Frances Tiafoe (20) meet in the semifinals in the bottom half of the draw.
The last American man to win a Slam? Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.
2024 U.S. Open women’s singles draw, bracket
No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka is the only semifinalist who has won a major before, taking the last two Australian Opens. She routed Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinals.
While No. 6 Jessica Pegula faces unseeded Karolina Muchova, the Czech’s low ranking is largely due to going 10 months between tournaments due to a wrist injury after making last year’s U.S. Open semifinals.
